How TutorBoost works

The rules, in plain English, before you need them. This is our operating policy — the terms are the contract.

What TutorBoost charges

Free costs nothing and keeps 20% of a lesson. Pro is $19.00 a month and keeps 10%.

  • You can use TutorBoost free. Everything works on the free plan — your booking page, payments, the classroom, attendance records and payouts. TutorBoost keeps 20% of each completed lesson and you keep 80%.
  • Pro is $19.00 a month and halves that: TutorBoost keeps 10% and you keep 90%.
  • Pro pays for itself once you are earning about $190.00 a month through TutorBoost. Below that the free plan is genuinely cheaper for you, and we would rather say so.
  • A trial with a student YOU brought is charged the ordinary 20%, like any other lesson.
  • A trial with a student TutorBoost introduced to you is split 50/50, once. That is the finding fee, and it is the only time we charge one. Elsewhere the first lesson with a new student is taught for nothing.
  • Apart from that one trial, the rate does not change: not with how many hours you teach, not with how long you have been here, and not with how the student found you.
  • There is no listing fee, and no charge for having a profile.
  • Card processing is the reason the rate exists, so it is not also deducted separately. A tutor is paid a percentage of the lesson price, not of whatever survived the payment processor.

How lesson payments work

The student pays when they book. TutorBoost holds the money until the lesson has happened.

  • Payment is taken at booking, through Stripe. TutorBoost never sees or stores card details.
  • Card checkout normally adds a $0.99 booking fee. It is shown separately before payment and is waived where the checkout says so, including eligible credit, pack, or Plus payments.
  • The money is held — not paid to the tutor — until the lesson is marked complete. This is what makes a refund possible when something goes wrong.
  • Once the lesson is complete, the tutor’s share is added to their balance and TutorBoost takes its commission.
  • Lessons must be priced between $3.00 and $1,000.00.

Cancellations and refunds

If your tutor cancels, the lesson price is returned. If you cancel, it depends on notice.

  • If the TUTOR cancels, the paid lesson price is returned to the original payment method, or a lesson is restored to the pack that paid for it.
  • If the STUDENT cancels with at least as much notice as the tutor asks for, the paid lesson price is returned. Each tutor sets their notice window and it is shown before booking.
  • If the STUDENT cancels inside that window, the lesson is not automatically refunded. The tutor reserved that time and can no longer sell it.
  • The booking fee is separate from the lesson price and is normally non-refundable once card checkout succeeds, unless applicable law requires otherwise.
  • Clear attendance outcomes may be decided automatically from the TutorBoost room record. Missing or ambiguous evidence, repeated disputes, and contested decisions go to a person.
  • A cancellation refund goes to the original payment method. A missed-lesson remedy may instead be TutorBoost lesson credit, as shown in the lesson decision.

18+ only

Everyone on TutorBoost — student and tutor — must be 18 or older.

  • You must confirm you are 18 or older to use TutorBoost, on either side.
  • We are not currently set up to keep under-18s safe. That needs guardian accounts, background-checked tutors and a safeguarding team. We would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
  • If you believe someone under age is using the platform, report it and we will act on it.

Reviews

Reviews come only from students who actually took the lesson.

  • Only a student who completed a paid lesson can review that lesson, once.
  • Tutors cannot write, edit, remove or reorder their own reviews. They can reply, publicly.
  • A tutor with no reviews shows as new — never as unrated-but-good.
  • We do not buy, seed or fabricate reviews, and we do not remove a review for being unflattering.

Keeping lessons on TutorBoost

Arranging payment off-platform removes the protections both sides rely on.

  • If payment happens off-platform there is no escrow, so a student has nothing to refund from and a tutor has nothing guaranteeing they get paid.
  • It also means no lesson record, no dispute route, and no reviews.
  • We keep the commission low (20%, flat) precisely so that going around it is not worth the risk to either side.

When something goes wrong

Report it from the lesson room. Every report creates a record.

  • Missed lessons, payment problems and classroom issues can all be reported from the lesson itself.
  • Reporting attaches the lesson’s own record — times, attendance, payment state — so nobody has to reconstruct what happened from memory.
  • Clear room evidence can release the tutor’s share or issue lesson credit automatically after the lesson. Missing, conflicting, or contested evidence is reviewed by a person.
